I was very proud of getting an invitation to judge this memorial tourney. I was introduced to Jan in the fall of 1979. Meeting in the monthly sessions of our regional chess problem club, I came to know a pleasant, wise and encouraging person who was able to take up a positive attitude
even towards my most humble efforts. We, the members of this small club, had the priviledge of enjoying the guidance of an
expert composer. In the 1990s, Jan’s own output gradually diminished, but a few years ago there was a new burst of activity, as he was re-
covering from a serious stroke. Then, all of a sudden, came the news of Jan’s departure. Jan Hannelius still lives in the memory of many of us. He held the presidency of PCCC for no less than twelve years, winning everybody’s respect, and attended the congresses ever since the first in
Piran in 1958. And one day, when we who remember him no longer exist, Jan Hannelius’ place in chess problem history will remain secure through his compositions, his unique administrative career – and his theme. The pioneer of the theme was probably composed by Bruno Sommer in 1929.
Jan Hannelius’ first example was published in 1950, but the idea was generally labelled “Hannelius Theme” as late as around 1970, when a theme tourney was organized by Thémes-64. It is my impression that the theme has received intensive consideration by composers since 1960s, i.e. more or less during 40 years.
