Modern chess is too much concerned with things like pawn structure. Forget it, checkmate ends the game. -
Nigel ShortAbout the courseBut first, you may wonder why this course is called The "Unexpected" Mate?
The reason is that all the mate-in-1 positions (over 600!) are made possible by the opponent's final move! The key, however, is to ensure that you recognize and make the most of that opportunity.
While most courses are based on the idea of developing a strategy towards mate, this course is different: none of the games referenced in this course, before the opponent's final move, have a forced mate.
One bad move nullifies forty good ones. -
HorowitzIn each variation, the losing player had a move to prevent the quick mate. But didn't.
This means that the value of this course, is both the mating patterns themselves, and to grow an awareness of looking for your opponent's weak moves.
All the mating variations in the original 601 exercises of the course are from games where both players have a rating of at least 2500.
