This volume has been organized with one major goal in mind: to help learners acquire the four language skills of speaking, listening, reading, and writing in order to communicate with speakers of Brazilian Portuguese in various contexts. With English speakers in mind, this 14-unit course aims directly at the goal of familiarizing learners with aspects of Brazilian culture through up-to-date and authentic dialogues and readings that reflect contemporary life in Brazil, and tasks that lead to practicing the topics covered in each unit. Every attempt has been made to present modern Portuguese spoken in the streets of Brazil, and to create an exceptionally user-friendly manual that presents real-life situations through non-artificial language used in the dialogues, an accurate and straightforward description of content, clear and succinct grammar explanations, and a variety of vocabulary presented in a contextualized manner. In addition, listening activities, audio resources, and a simplified guide to pronunciation have been thoughtfully developed to provide learners with a clear understanding of the phonological system of Brazilian Portuguese, enhance listening comprehension and help with mastering pronunciation. This complete one-year course covers the main points of contemporary Brazilian Portuguese, including such intricacies as the personal infinitive, the future subjunctive, and functions of the language, in an original and fun way.
